Homemade Floor Curling Setup
We made our own floor curling setup in Hsinchu City, Taiwan so more people can join in on the fun. Come play floor curling with us!
If you’re interested in building your own floor curling rink, here’s a quick tutorial on how we did ours:
Found an area that is 10 meters by 2 meters that has a smooth floor surface.
Printed target mats to the right size based on the booklet on floor curling. I designed everything at 1:1 ratio on Adobe Illustrator.
We found a vendor that does canvas prints, this one is one that we have been working with for a while. We told them to print the canvas and leave the edges “raw” so no gamuts and no sewing needed on any of the edges.
We found multiple vendors that sell floor curling stones at the price that we can afford, and asked about the overall size and weight of the stone, trying to match to what the handbook says.
Taped up the “rink” using PVC tape, we know that these last longer in areas with lots of foot traffic because we have attempted to do something before with the same material.
One thing we learned is that the tape used for the outside perimeter of the rink can be PVC tape, so thicker in material and better for wear and tear, but for the inside (where the hog lines are) you should be using “masking tape.” Masking tape is thinner and have a lower profile that allow the ball bearings of the stones to roll over smoother, for a more authentic experience. Our current setup using PVC tape for the hog lines and you notice the stones “skip” when they roll over the hog lines.
We ordered a half a set of 8 stones, 4 reds and 4 yellows from our supplier to test out the ball bearings on our granite floor set up, and it worked pretty well, so we ordered the rest of the set.
We play 16 stones, 8 stones for each team, mirroring real ice curling for 8 player games, where one person delivers two stones, and at the 5th stone we can start taking out the stones.
Other things to note: I designed and printed the rules of play on a large sign panel so that new players who have never experienced curling can learn the sport by reading the sign. This info is pulled directly from World Floor Curling’s Website (no need to reinvent the wheel here), we made it English and Chinese language so everyone can understand and play.
To protect the target mat, we place clear plastic over the house area and remove that every time we play.
Each time we play, we prep the rink area by dry sweeping the entire track to get rid of any dust and debris. This is super important!!! The play area should be 100% clean and dry so that the bearings can last longer.
